Help Make My Film Production Journal Entry - August 18, 2003

Rule #1 of shooting an independent film:

Find locations that you can get cheaply or for free...

I'm so excited. I think I may have found a great location for the bar in Wildflower. This weekend, I performed with my band Carousel (we play a  mix of classic rock with a little R&B and country). We performed at  a place called Traveller's Lounge (it's in a hotel across from the Miami  Airport). The gig was a lot of fun and the place was what I envisioned  the bar in the film would look like inside. The only thing, I'd have to  find another location for a couple of the scenes that happen in the bar's  bathroom & office. The bathroom in this place was way too small for  the scene that I want to shoot and I didn't see where the offices were.  But then again I didn't scout the hotel, so I'll do that later. Since the  bar loved the band, hopefully we'll be playing there in the future and  I can see if I can work out something to shoot there.

The people were very friendly there and when it's time to start locking  in locations, it's the kind of place which would probably let us shoot  there on an off-night. We'll see. I still have my eyes open for other spots.  It helps that I'm usually in these places performing. The guys in my band  (we have a trio) were worried at first. When they drove up, some drunk  woman drove up on a scooter and saw them unloading the equipment (I didn't  show up until 45 minutes before we performed). The first thing out of her  mouth was "Hey, y'all ain't got no blacks in your band do ya?"  And people don't think rednecks still live in Miami. Apparently, she doesn't  normally go to that bar because our flyers were all over the place. So  as quickly as she went in to get a drink, she was hustled out.

Aside from that, the gig went well and another bar manager (from a neighboring bar) came in just to hear us. He loved us and we'll be playing at his bar  too. So all in all it was a very productive night. We got a few more gigs,  a cool place to play (the people there were really into what we were doing)  and possibly the perfect place to shoot a few scenes in my film.

The past week has just been extremely busy and filled with rewriting, updating the look of the entire website, getting the first stunt ready for unveiling  and working to pay my bills. I'm almost free from the script's rewrite  so soon I'll have new features and details on the film. I should have some  new entries in Jasmine's Journal as well.

'So come on back now ya hear!'
